by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
When I was just a little girl
Life was frightening and unsure
'Till one day a strong hand took mine
I looked, and there you were
It did not take me long at all
Strange feelings in me grew
And every night as I was sleeping
I would dream of you
As the months passed into years
Our friendship grew and grew
Though in your eyes I was just a girl
My heart longed for you
Even from the very start
You treated me with care
Like a sweet, beloved brother
You were always there
Then finally you looked at me
The way that lovers do
I thought my heart would burst with joy
When you said you loved me too
Through all those years together
Until the very end
You were all I ever wanted
My husband and my friend
My life will never be the same
Part of me left with you
But I so want for you to know
You were my dream come true
A Love Eternal
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
High amongt the heavens
There glides on cloud above
A valiant, loving angel
Who awaits his one true love
His heart, it knows no anger
Her happiness is all he seeks
He patiently awaits the day
The two once more will meet
He smiles at the sound of her laughter
His heart aches when she weeps
Her earthly loves, he celebrates
While he waits for her to sleep
His time on earth has ended
But his love for her lives on
And even when she sings not just for him
How he loves to hear the song
So, live, dear lady all your life
And so without remiss
For this love yet burning in your heart
He knows full well is his
Reach out, love, and revel
In all your life holds in store
Knowing high within the heavens
He waits for you, evermore
I Can Feel Your Touch
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
I cannot see you anymore
Those eyes of blue are closed
And the sorrow that I have endured
Few will ever know
In the years apart I have seen
That my life must go on
I now love another
But my heart still hears our song
I sense your presence everywhere
Watching over me
I have come to learn to trust
That which I cannot see
And in my deepest sorrow
When it all just seems too much
It is then I truly know you're with me
I can feel your touch
In Her Daddy's Eyes
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
Long before her day had come
Her mom was mesmerized
By the compassion and the warmth
In her daddy's eyes
Blue that put the sky to shame
Was the shade God chose to dye
The windows to the purest soul
That were her daddy's eyes
And on, at last that wondrous day
He held her, close and tight
She looked upon this gentle man
With her daddy's eyes
As she grew so quickly
One could recognise
Each time they cast upon her
The joy in her daddy's eyes
There came upon them
A fateful day, sorrow could not be disguised
For destiny had spoken
And closed her daddy's eyes
But her mother's grief was tempered
Her heartbreak would subside
For their love, she saw, knew no end
It's in their daughter's eyes
A young woman now she's grown to be
Gliding 'cross the ice
Each time she peers into the glass
May she see the pride in daddy's eyes
In Your Dreams
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
When I look back upon my life
The most vivid thing I see
Is the lovely time together
Only you and me
So many wondrous memories
I was able to take with me
There's love enough to last me
All eternity
I know there's times that you regret
Things you left untold
But darling, please believe me
My life was solid gold
So let not your heart be burdened
By things you did not say
What you do not realize
Is that I knew it anyway
It may appear I'm gone forever
But things are not always as they seem
Lie down and rest your mind, my love
And I'll meet you in your dreams
Let Your Heart Be Your Eyes
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
Each day you go seeking
What eyes no longer see
Hoping, wishing desperately
To catch a glimpse of me
I watch you as you wander
In your own futility
For what you look for is no more
But that's no longer me
Close those precious eyes, my love
Listen from within
And you will hear me whisper
Your name upon the wind
Then, open up your eyes once more
Watch the children play
And you will see the little boy
Who never went away
Glide across the glistening ice
It all started here
Feel my breath upon your neck
And know that I am there
You need never search for me
For I merely wear disguise
I am ever where you are
Let your heart be your eyes
The Greatest Gift
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
From the day you took my hand
And we skated side by side
Somewhere deep inside me
I knew you'de be my guide
As we grew together
All throughout the years
You were my protector
And I knew no fear
You understood the way of things
And that life was not always kind
Out of love, you shielded me
Innocence was mine
I watched your every gesture
Compassionate, warm and kind
It was not simply love I felt
I was so proud you were mine
Of all the titles that we won
I was your greatest pride
A fact that all the world could see
This you never tried to hide
You never had to work at love
The way that others do
I had the honour of knowing
That was simply you
For one so capable of sharing
The best that he could be
I am forever grateful
You chose to share with me
And though our time together
Was tragically cut short
I must say right here and now
No one will ever teach me more
You gave so much to me in life
But above all, I think is this
It's not how long a life you have
But how much you love with it
And all my life, I will know
Until the end of time
The greatest gift you had to give
Is forever mine
Together, Evermore
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
She lies tired and weary
Age has taken toll
The life she's lived has no regret
But for one gaping hole
Her family she has sent away
She's said her goodbyes
For she knows too well the anguish
Of watching a loved one die
As her body weakens
And her heartbeat slows
At the corner of her bedside
Appears a wondrous glow
She does not recognize at first
But he quickly shows his form
Her long lost beloved
Has come to take her home
They smile to each other
And he says in softest tone
“You were there for me, my love
You'll not leave this world alone”
“Take my hand once more my dear
Let me be your guide
And I will be, as I always have
Forever at your side”
At morning's break they found her
With the smile on her face she wore
That told them all beyond all doubt
They were together, evermore
Wildflowers
by Bonnie McKinney (2006)
A child of eleven
Yet a stoic already was she
He fifteen, and a wildflower
Growing wherever he pleased
She showed him how to focus
And to strive for perfect scores
He taught her to smell the wildflowers
And see that life offered so much more
Together they were champions
They were lovers, they were friends
Wildflowers grew around them
No beginning, and no end
From the day they joined in marriage
Each morning she woke to find
Fresh picked wildflowers
In a vase at her bedside
When she returned that dreadful night
Cradling his skates with care
The scent of that morning's wildflowers
Filled the evening air
She took her beloved home to rest
In their native land
She watched him lowered into the ground
Wildflowers in his hands
Long months later she returned
And she dropped to her knees and wept
At the sight of the wildflowers
That grew atop where he slept
