HOLIDAY ICE DREAMS, Trenton, NJ, USA

by Sylvia

I only have a  few minutes now, but I wanted to include a quick and dry "tech. report" on Katia's two programs from last night.

"Red Scarf" - One of her opening moves was a back somersault on the ice (an element that goes with her "Cirque du Soleil" music choice!). Then one cool thing she does with the scarf is unfold it onto the front of her body as she is skating forward so the scarf looks like a tee shirt fluttering the breeze - no hands needed to hold it in place!  She goes into a planned double axel, which she singled in the performance (the element for which she did retakes at the end of the night). She then does a forward spiral with the scarf holding up her leg behind her, ties the scarf around her waist and later unties it during her serpentine (S-shaped) footwork sequence. A cool jump sequence followed: walley jump to Ina Bauer into double loop jump. Then she tied the scarf around her arm and did a flying camel (wobbled, then centered), another forward spiral with the scarf waving behind her, neat changes of edge moves, and a layback spin with the scarf above her head. At the very end, she deliberately drops the scarf onto the ice and skates away from it. Her basic skating and stroking is still a joy to behold. She wore a pretty serious expression on her face through this program which I felt matched the mood of the "Stella Errans" song.

The elements in her "I Hope You Dance" (Lee Ann Womack) program were: double loop, double axel (yay!), split jump into double toe loop, spin combination of camel-sit-back sit, serpentine footwork sequence with a nice smile on her face, flying camel spin that changed to a forward inside edge while spinning (I think this is new for her!), layback, spiral sequence (forward, then backward, nicely held), butterfly. Then Ilia came out to join her and they did a lovely forward outside edge "pairs" spiral together (his leg was extended a little higher than hers!).

Daria's little group number was cute, and the one solo element she did mimicked Paul Wylie's before her -- a flying camel down into a back sit spin, which was pretty good for her skill level. Daria wore the same pale yellow dress she wore for her solo in the Danbury, CT charity show.

I'll try and post a full review when I have more time!
